You are a family physician. You notice bruises on your patient, a 10 year boy. What would you do?
Evaluate If the appearance of these bruises indicated something other than typical for a child who runs, plays and jumps around. If so, nonchalantly and cheerfully mention them during the physical examination and note the patients/guardians response. Palpate the bruise if they/guardians seem unsure where it came from and suggest a CBC. If during this I became very suspicious of harm or neglect, I would proceed as necessary and investigate further to ensure this isn’t an unfounded suspicion before acting further.
