During your shift, you notice your preceptor is intoxicated. What do you do?
Hi, my name is Alex Gilbert. And thank you for taking the time to get to know me today in this kind of situation. I think its first important to take a step back and consider my role. I'm a medical clerk and I have a duty to be professional and maintain the ethics and safety of my patients and my co-workers. I can understand that. This may be a dilemma because this perceptor maybe a friend or co-worker that I know and they are intoxicated. They have done something that is very irresponsible at the
Workplace, I believe I have a duty to First discuss this with my projector. Tell them what I know that they need to leave immediately because they're putting myself in the safety of my patients at risk.
Hopefully they would understand that me coming to them in a calm respectful way and communicated with him first which would allow them to leave. If not, I would have to discuss with someone else or security to help to ask them to leave. Unfortunately in this position. I do need to notify my supervisor or someone higher up about this. This may not be an isolated incident incident and it's important to for us to be accountable and take action in these kind of incidents.
I Believe by fostering a safe and accountable workplace and Healthcare setting is a one of those Central roles of physician. We have to be a leader in the community. Thank you.
